The Probability of Death — A book to re-engage a new audience with the theory of mathematical probability

The main output was a book that consisted of three chapters. The first discusses the meaning of death and mortality. The second presents the different applications of probability, specifically within insurance and actuary. The third chapter consists of statistical tables that allowed the user to calculate their probability of dying within the given week.

The typefaces I chose to use are Ogg and Neue Haas Grotesk. I chose Ogg as my display face because of its dramatic italic weight. I felt it’s calligraphic style was tonally appropriate for the subject matter of death, and was reminiscent of classical literature. I chose the typeface Neue Haas Grotesk to compliment this because of its clarity and legibility. As the focal point of the project was numbers, I wanted a simple and refined typeface with a humanistic sensibility. I felt the dramatic contrast between the two, allowed me to communicate both the romantic tone of death and the functionality of mathematics.
